Steve Knight from Caves Beach SLSC, Surf Life Saving NSW Life Member and devoted leader with an infectious energy has sadly passed away.
Steve joined the Surf Life Saving movement in 1985 aged 36 ahead of almost four decades of service to his club, branch and the state across many roles from club president to advisor, referee, branch executive and his greatest role, medal presentation at surf sport events.
From age manager supporting his two children Kelly and Bradley, to gaining his Bronze Medallion in 1988, event official in almost every capacity, board member, president, Steve was a well-respected member of the community, and a real ‘all-rounder’.
His devotion to Surf Life Saving saw him receive a number of outstanding commendations and build a strong legacy across the state.
Hunter Branch President Henry Scruton ESM spent many years travelling to events officiating alongside Steve and said he was terrific.
“He had an infectious personality and was always happy to see you. When you met Steve, you never forgot him. He was an absolute gentleman,” Scruton said.
“Steve loved being at carnivals with the officials. He took his job of handing out medals to the kids very seriously. There was an importance in shaking their hand and making it a real moment. He just loved it.”
His commitment to youth development and member services was particularly notable and just one of the many areas he was able to impart his knowledge, support and energy.
His loss will be felt by the hundreds of young members he helped and inspired, especially Interbranch teams he managed and Junior Lifesaver of the Year nominees who he’d spend hours working with, preparing them for their applications and interviews.
After a battle with diabetes and suffering a recent heart attack, Steve passed away on Sunday 27 October at John Hunter Hospital.
Steve is survived by his two children and grandchildren.
He will be greatly missed by all, but his legacy lives on.
