The incredible efforts of a select group of volunteers, known as the North Coast Roving Patrol team, have helped the regional Branch to maintain a high standard of lifesaving on local beaches throughout the season.
As the season winds down and flags prepare to be lowered, the numbers behind their efforts showcase the camaraderie and determination to help where possible that Surf Life Saving is known for.
Woolgoolga SLSC’s Chief Training Officer, Glynis Kirby got the ball rolling early in the season, reaching out to qualified and experienced lifesavers who might want to lend a hand to priority clubs in the Branch.
It was an initiative that ticked boxes off the beach, ensuring compliance with patrolling standards across the region, but the lifesavers who volunteered their time ended up getting along so well that it created new bonds and became an opportunity for those taking part to become better lifesavers, learning from those around them.
“I joined the North Coast Roving Patrol because I wanted to support other clubs in the branch,” said patrolling member, Ashleigh Slater.
“It was also really good to meet new people and gain insight into how different clubs operate.
“It was a great opportunity for me to gain experience from a variety of beach conditions.”
Branch Director of Lifesaving, Jayne Morrison and Club Captains from across the region communicated constantly to maintain beach safety standards, particularly through the peak summer period.
In all, nearly 20 roving patrols were performed across clubs including Nambucca Heads SLSC, Evans Head-Casino SLSC and Red Rock Corindi SLSC, where not only were feet on the ground offered to these clubs, but assets as well, with IRB crews and boats often sent to assist with patrols.
With more than 160 patrolling hours tallied between the group, it’s a true showcase of dedication by a fantastic group of not just lifesavers, but people.
