“Listen up, listen up, listen up!”
There would hardly be a surfboat rower in the country who would not have heard these words over the PA at a carnival. Sadly, legend rower and surfboat commentator ‘Zom’ passed away after a short battle with cancer on Wednesday 27 May.
Zom’s final appearance in the commentary box was at the NSW Championships at Swansea Belmont in early March.
Zom was so hellbent on attending the State Titles, he was discharged from hospital on the Saturday morning and was driven directly to Blacksmiths Beach to join the commentary team.
He was a proud member over the years of several clubs on the Northern Beaches, including Freshwater, Sth Curl Curl, Manly, Nth Narrabeen and Collaroy. Zom will be remembered by so many surfboat rowers, officials and club mates, who will all miss his call sign - “This is Z.O.M-FM, signing off.”
SLSNSW sends its deepest condolences to Zom’s family and friends at this sad time.
