The Support Operations Coordinator will focus on improving the support operations of lifesaving to ensure SLSNSW remains contemporary and has the capacity and capability to deliver and to protect lives.

Surf Life Saving NSW is the state’s primary water safety and rescue organisation and one of the largest volunteer movements in the country. We support more than 77,000 members in 129 clubs to serve the community through the provision of beach patrol services, coastal emergency response, training and education, sports and junior development.

Reporting to the Public Safety Manager the core purpose of this role is to position SLSNSW through its frontline members as the peak body for coastal water safety, by ensuring personnel are both capable & ready for “outside the flags” operations. You will be a quick learner and motivated to work across lifesaving operational areas such as support operations and emergency management.  

Key responsibilities

Key responsibilities for this role include:

Support Operations & Emergency Management

  • Analysis of necessary manning levels and capability requirements to achieve stated organisation benchmarks and Emergency Service responsibilities;
  • Develop, maintain and review operational procedures & guidelines.  Monitor performance and adjust responses in line with best Emergency Management practices;
  • Monitor operational readiness of all SLSNSW, Branch and club assets and ensure integration of response capability;
  • Plan and prepare for all eventualities to ensure continuity of operations and the provision of essential functions.
  • Constantly review past incidents and case studies to assess and identify areas of improvement. Research best practice to improve individual capability and overall quality of response;
  • Assisting the Public Safety Manager open regular liaison with all Emergency Services, support services and related government agencies to develop an overarching situational awareness in matters relating to incidents, emergencies, identified dangers and hazardous situations;
  • Investigate and appraise new and emerging technologies in pursuit of greater capability to ensure optimum operational efficiencies and integration with current internal systems and those of allied Emergency Services.

Recruitment & Training

  • Develop recruitment, training and upskilling strategies for support operation services at all levels of the organisation;
  • Recruit appropriately qualified and experienced people into a variety of roles, ensuring positive behavioural traits and cultural fit;
  • Monitor the performance of volunteer staff relevant to the Surf Emergency Response System and implement strategies to ensure the highest operational capability in all rescue and emergency situations;
  • Develop and manage training exercises in response to a variety of potential Search and Rescue or Emergency scenarios and situations;
  • Work with other stakeholders to develop and implement a state-wide training program to upskill all Branch and Club personnel to a baseline standard as agreed by the Lifesaving Standing Committee and SLSNSW Board.

People & Project Management

  • Provide guidance, operational knowledge and support to all volunteer support operations members and Branches;
  • Work closely with the Public Safety Manager and Operations Manager, Public Safety to meet the strategic objectives of the organisation;
  • Develop, coordinate, and administer relevant projects that contribute to the strategic direction of the Public Safety department and the organisation as a whole;
  • Negotiate and administer various contracts with third parties as required;
  • Provide financial information in accordance with funding requirements and report expenditure as defined in those funding arrangements.
  • Highlight and promote leadership qualities and ethical standards to all stakeholders;
  • Develop succession plans for all positions and identify potential delegates for emergency situations of short-term or extended authority;
  • Assist in ensuring Member Welfare strategies are implemented for all support operation members.   Monitor post-incident approaches and de-briefs.  Assist in organisational responses to member welfare as a result of critical or stressful situations.
  • Consult and collaborate with members, staff and external agencies as required to achieve the overall aims of the organisation.
Essential skills required
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in a related field (e.g. Business Administration or Public Safety);
  • Previous experience in a position which required sound judgments without supervision, often with competing priorities under extreme pressure and critical time frames;
  • Superior reasoning and effective analysis, predictive and planning skills with demonstrable innovative approaches to evaluation and problem solving;
  • Ability to visualize, develop and implement complex and integrated processes in response to critical challenges and situations;
  • Experience in a position requiring organisational and administrative skills within a defined command structure, quickly interpreting intent and developing strategy to deliver desired results;
  • Experience in Emergency Service coordination and strategy and application;
  • Significant experience in project management and contract administration;
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with a variety of stakeholders
  • An understanding/experience of Risk Management processes
  • Current driver’s license, willing to undertake travel
  • Demonstrated Microsoft Office Skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Flexible attitude to work, including outside of normal working hours.
